Thats rec.arts.drwho for interesting sci-fi discussion.
I'll go even further.
I've targeted alt.startrek now to be cleansed of any bullying ....
assuming there may be some.
Anyway ... I just started lurking there.
If anyone knows an active Star Wars group please let me know.
rec.arts.startrek.* still exists.
but he's after Star Wars groups!!
Daniel
that's rec.arts.sf.starwars.*
Star Trek.....
Star Wars ...
You would think that the 2 most popular sci-fi franchises in the world
would have a newsgroup with more than 10 people discussing their merits.
Sadly (or happily for us) Dr. Who has that honour and these two
franchises seem rather neglected on usenet.
For last Christmas, one of my sisters brought me the Dr Who/ST:TNG
cross-over book. Still haven't got around to reading it yet.

I've got a sister like that. Not a clue. I'm always getting Startrek
merchandise from her as presents.
I've never been a Startrek fan, although we'd oten gather as many as
we could fit in the day room whenever the reruns came on so we could
make rude comments.
Whoever wrote it didn't know shit about military ships. The captain
NEVER puts himself into personal danger. He has far too many
responsibilities to the ship and to the crew.
That's why Navy ships have Marines.
I just never could get past that stupidity. Kirk wouldn't last 5
minutes in command of a REAL starship.
About the only good thing to come out of Startrek was it inspired the
StarWRECK series.
People talk about the early Doctor Who being cheesy, but I think they
did a pretty good job given the budgets they had to work with.
Startrek had a lot bigger budget than Doctor Who. They could have
afforded to use a bit better props.
The first Star Wars almost blew me away. Standing by itself (before it
became Episode IV) it was just fantastic, even if the spaceships did
move around like Flash Gordon serials from the 30s. Compared to most
of what had come before it stood head & shoulders above the rest.
The best space opera was Kubrick's 2001. The space ships moved
ballistically and when the rocket landed on the moon, its thrusters
looked those that we'd see in the films from the Apollo landings
several years later.
Kubric put SCIENCE first in his science-fiction.
OTOH, the shithead who brought Heinlein's Starship Troopers to the
screen should have been taken out an shot.
