Kevin Smith writing and directing Star Wars TV series
Posted on Wed, 27-Apr-2005

IESB has confirmed that "Jay and Silent Bob" brainchild Kevin Smith will
indeed be involved in the forthcoming live-action "Star Wars" TV Series.

According to the site, "Kevin's involvement will be in the writing and
directing of at least a three episode story arch."

The abovementioned site also caught up with Smith's regular co-star Jason
Mewes at the "House of Wax" premiere and discovered Smith was also lucky
enough to see "Revenge of the Sith" this week.

The good news?.... drumroll....Smith said the film is "amazing", just as
grand as "The Empire Strikes Back", regarded by many as not only the finest
of the "Star Wars" films but one of the slickest flicks of all the time.

"He said it's really dark....he likes it a lot", says Mewes. "He said it's
as good as Empire...[but] a lot darker than Empire".

Ahh, the joys of misinformation as practised by the "news" media. :-\

The title makes it sound like Kevin Smith is doing the whole thing. You
then read the "news" to find he's only doing "at least three" episodes.

Luckily most of us already know that George Lucas has said he's writing
and directing the TV series to begin with, so we know that title is
hopelessly inaccurate.

Curious, I don't know why "being dark" would make ROTS "great"!
Having said that, I personally believe ROTS is (thank God!) not dark
at all. In the end, in line with the classic epics and unlike really
dark stories (like the Dune books), the moral message of ROTS is
pretty clear and unambiguous: Anakin chooses the dark path and suffers
terrible consequences from his choice: he loses his wife, his
children, his friends, his legs, his arm, and whatever is left of his
body is burned beyond recognition, leaving no doubt that making a deal
with the devil doesn't pay off! I grant though that the emperor gets
away with ruling the galaxy, but it's quite clear from the birth of
the rebel alliance and from the birth of the Jedi twins that his rule
will be only temporary. A tragic story yes, but hardly dark.

Incidentally, I must say that the ROTS plot is very weak. The idea
that the emperor would seduce Anakin by promising to teach him how to
cheat death, and that Anakin , raised in the Jedi philosophy of
compassion, would become a genocidal murder based on that promise, is
completely ludicrous. Besides, from the trailers, Natalie Portman
crying that Anakin is "breaking her heart" and Hayden calling on her
"not to turn against him" looks as bad as their love scenes in AOTC!

In fact, the whole idea that "fear of loss leads to the dark side" is
lame IMHO. In ESB and ROTJ, Luke's fear of losing Leia might have
eventually driven him to the dark side, but only to the extent that it
would cause him to hate Vader for hurting her (anger/hatred being the
real trigger to embracing the dark side). We obviously don't see any
reference in the original trilogy to silly witchcraft like
ressurecting the dead ! I apologize to those who disagree (the
majority I guess), but I can't help saying I'm terribly disappointed
with this below-average conclusion to the saga.

Perhaps Sidious is exerting some influence over Anakin? Weak-minded? I would
say so.

I think they looked fine. I had no problem with them at all.

Oh FFS! It hasn't even been released yet !!! How can you say it's below
average.

At least wait until it's been released, and you've seen it.

I think it looks fucking awesome.

I can't wait.

Well... if you were to judge by the last live-action Star Wars TV show
(the Holiday Special) there's very little to look forward to, unless
you like psychadelic, drug induced muscials. :-\

The new TV series will be NOTHING like that ... hopefully. :-)

I wonder if Bea Arthur and Harvey Korman will be starring in the new TV
show.

Oh great . . now it's going to be a bunch of jedis running around seeing how
many times they can say the F word, and how much they can insult one
another.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Jay and Silent Bob strike back. But I don't
want that style mixed in with Star Wars. I know he would take a different
approach , I'm kidding about the top line . . but I don't want Kevin Smith
doing Star Wars, I think he's sort of over hyped.

He appears to be a big fan and I suppose that's imporant, but I don't see
anything else on his resume that indicates he would be up for this kind of
project.
